Quentin Harlé, Trading & Power Asset Structuration, Rhodia Energy, Paris

Tell us about your main assignments.
I work on the Energy Management Services (EMS) team at Rhodia Energy. I am entrusted with monitoring and modelling the natural gas and electricity markets; balancing electricity flows; and structuring offers for external clients (mainly on electrical production assets).
Why did you choose Rhodia?
Rhodia Energy gave me solid expertise in the French energy markets by funding the end of my university studies. It was not easy to set up, because it was a completely novel approach. In fact, it was the first time Rhodia had funded a Ph.D. thesis in a discipline radically different from its traditional areas of R&D. So, even after I finished my Ph.D., it just seemed natural for me to keep riding the wave in order to help Rhodia develop in the energy industry.
What had been your background up until then?
I studied finance at university. After getting my French master's degree equivalent (DEA) in 2006, Rhodia asked me to work in risk valuation and management for its electricity generators (combined heat and power units). I worked for four years on this project to complete my industry-based Ph.D. as part of an agreement between Rhodia and my research lab at the Sorbonne. I defended my thesis last December.
What do you find most compelling about your job today?
The team's dynamic spirit and our ability to transform market, industry and regulatory constraints into opportunities for Rhodia.
I am passionate about the universe of energy in all its complexity. With Rhodia, every day I am able to discover some industrial reality I had never heard of during my university studies.
My career opportunities? I intend to continue learning with the Rhodia Energy teams and earn recognition for my acquired experience to make my way up through the company.
